I caught up with Winter a few days ago in Lincoln, Nebraska. Winter is still Starbucking and promoting the documentary. As you can see, Winter has made himself into a walking billboard by wearing the Starbucking DVD box around his neck. Winter is selling autographed copies of Starbucking to any who see him. Starbucking is in fact on shelves in Best Buy stores, and they have it for a good price. The problem is, Best Buy does not have a "Documentary" section. You may find it in "Special Interest" or perhaps somewhere else. Ask one of those guys in a blue shirt and khaki pants and I'm sure they'll be able to direct you to it.

I wasn't aware of this until recently, but Starbucking is available at Best Buy. It was my understanding that they didn't usually carry indie documentaries, so I'm happy to see it there. Maybe if it sells well for them they'll be more inclined to carry indie film.

Starbucking is mentioned in the Map section of the January 2007 issue (pg. 18) in stores now. The release date of Starbucking has also been finalized. You'll be able to find Starbucking in major retailers on April 24, 2007.

The STARBUCKING DVD will be available at major retailers in April 2007. The final version of the movie along with bonus features and commentary from Winter and I will be included on the disc. It's official ladys and gents. We've inked a distribution deal for STARBUCKING! It'll be distributed by Heretic Films with a DVD release scheduled for April 2007. I'm putting the final touches on the documentary getting it ready. This coming weekend I'm hooking up with Winter in California to record the DVD commentary. More details to follow, but expect to see STARBUCKING in a major retailer near you soon!

Starbucking has been given the honor of being chosen as a "Cinema Epicuria Select" movie!

Cinema Epicuria – The Sonoma Valley Film Festival’s next free “Cinema Epicuria Selects” movie shows next Wednesday at Carneros Bistro & Wine Bar in The Lodge at Sonoma.

Film Festival Recap; Review

The Omaha Festival was great! Made some great contacts and had fun. The crowds were a little thin but the audience for STARBUCKING was fair. It was very well recieved!

The Sonoma Valley Film Festival was fantastic! STARBUCKING played to a sold out crowd opening night and a nearly full audience on Saturday morning. Comments were extremely positive!

One bay area critic called Starbucking one of the few "great" films at Sonoma! Here's the review:

STARBUCKING At least as entertaining as Supersize Me without its didactic quality, this odyssey with a guy whose goal in life is to sample all of the 1600 or so Starbucks worldwide is 21st century road trip film par excellence as well as a wacky Zen spiritual journey we are invited to participate in up close and almost too personally! CBS News / 60 Minutes producers have contacted me with great interest in STARBUCKING. I have sent a screener copy to the producers of the show for their review. They have been in touch with Winter and are working on a story having something to do with Starbucks. No word on whether Andy Rooney will play any part.

STARBUCKING is now entered in the Sonoma Valley Film Festival and the Los Angeles Film Festival. So will it get accepted into any of these festivals? It's any man's guess and I really have no idea since I'm new to the festival scene. What I DO know is that the documentary turned out great! I could be biased, but the sneak peak screenings have all garnered very positive comments!

Notification dates for some of these festivals are in late Jan. and early Feb.. I'll keep you updated here on which festivals accept STARBUCKING!!!

So far, STARBUCKING has been entered into SouthXSouthwest, The True/False Documentary Film Fest, East Lansing Film Fest, Nashville Film Fest, Omaha Film Fest. More to follow! Fine tuning continues on the documentary but it is essentially complete! A company in London England has entered into discussion with Starbuckingmovie.com about the possibility of screening STARBUCKING there. Meanwhile, Winter was again in national news this past Sunday when he was named "Worst Caffeine Addiction" on the best/worst of 2005 list in Parade Magazine.

I submitted STARBUCKING to the SouthXSouthWest film festival in Austin, Texas. Sadly, I heard back from Slamdance and was not accepted. No wonder really as I sent them a 13 minute movie fragment. Still no word from True/False or SXSW. I'll be submitting to a multitude of other fests soon. Fine tuning continues and STARBUCKING is turning out to be everything I had hoped!

Meanwhile I'm editing at a furious pace! STARBUCKING is really coming together nicely! I'm well on pace to be finished by the end of the year which was my original goal. Of course, I'm still shooting some additional footage when Winter hits Mexico and Seattle.

The trip to Reno was very productive! I followed Winter's frantic starbucking from Reno to Sacramento to San Francisco, San Jose, Monterey, Fresno and every Starbucks in between. We met some very bizarre people and some crazy things happened! Editing is moving into high gear. Current goal for STARBUCKING completion date: December! It looks like the STARBUCKING cameras might role again down in Old Mexico! Could be October depending on Winter's schedule. Thanks to everyone for all of the encouraging emails!

Media Blitz

The last week has been insane. It started last Saturday. I was on a bike in Sturgis, but I started getting calls from friends telling me there was a story about STARBUCKING on the front page of the Kearney Hub, the newspaper in the town where I live. I had been interviewed by a reporter but didn't know when the story would be coming out, and hadn't dreamed it would make the front page. Then on Monday, I was contacted by an Associated Press reporter from Omaha, NE. He interviewed me about the documentary and also talked to Winter. The article hit the AP wire sometime Monday evening. Then all hell broke loose.

On Tuesday I found phone messages from CNN, Good Morning America, and Inside Edition. I talked with MTV, Nightline, and major newspapers and radio stations across the country. The story was on the front page of Yahoo, it was on Fark.com, USA Today, and in newspapers world wide. I've seen the story in Spanish and Italian and it's probably been translated into other languages as well.

The website got 22,000 hits on Tuesday. I've sent out tapes of footage to numerous networks and tv stations. Winter appeared on CNN yesterday and is slated for a number of other tv and radio shows.

Now, on Friday, things seem to be slowing down. I've still got some radio interviews slated, but the flood of emails and calls has subsided. The damage is done. Now EVERYBODY knows about Starbucking. I've received emails from people excited about the movie and people who think both Winter and I are idiots. By the way, if I haven't responded to your email yet, I hope to soon.

So where are we now? I'm just starting to reflect on all this publicity instead of just reacting to it. I'm still just blown away by it all. It confirms what I already knew, that this is a very good idea for a documentary. What Winter is doing with his life is so different from everybody else that you can't help but be fascinated. Winter and Starbucks have this in common: People either love 'em, or hate 'em.

My enthusiasm for this documentary has never been higher. I've been quoted a million times as saying I hope to have it done by the years end. Looking at the calendar I realize that's sneaking up pretty quickly. The expectations have never been higher, and thanks to the amazing things that have happened to Winter that I've captured on tape, I don't think the final product will disappoint.

So now friends, it's time for me to get busy. I've got 40 hours and growing of great footage that I've got to transform into a 1 1/2 hour documentary. You're going to see the best of all the good stuff I've got. My creative juices are flowing! The muse has arrived! The wheel of fortuna has spun the responsibility of telling an amazing man's story to me. I shall not disappoint!!!

Meanwhile here at Starbucking central, editing is begining in earnest. I'm also gearing up to follow Winter into Mexico, and hopefully Asia or Europe.

Winter's presentation at UC Santa Barbara will take place on Friday May, 27th at 9:00PM. It will be in the Linda Vista room of Francisco Torres, a residence hall located at the corner of El Colegio and Storke on the campus of UCSB.

It's definite. Starbucking resumes shooting in Southern California around Memorial Day weekend which is the last weekend in May. Hear Winter's story from the horses mouth when he speaks at the University of California Santa Barbara on Friday May 27th. You'll also get a sneak peak at some scenes from STARBUCKING the documentary. Details on how you can attend will be posted as soon as I have them. In my experience, these things are open to the public and free to all comers, but I can't guarantee this.

Yesterday I got an email from a guy with a major Hollywood production house. He wanted to talk to me on the phone so I set up a time. He was enthusiastic about STARBUCKING and told me how his company could provide lots of services like make cinema prints of the movie and distribute to 1000's of cinemas around the country. Sounds great! I was explaining some things about the project to the guy and he realized I wasn't employed by or associated with Starbucks Coffee. Once he learned that I didn't have Starbucks Corporate $$$ backing me, he quickly lost interest, wished me luck, and hung up.

For now then, faithful reader, STARBUCKING remains an independent masterpiece backed by my own pocketbook, vision, and independent spirit. I wouldn't want it any other way!

Watch this blog for updates on the production of Starbucking the documentary. Looks like shooting will take up in Santa Barbara, California around the weekend of Memorial day at the end of May. Winter has been invited to speak at University of California Santa Barbara. You should be able to see a 5 to 10 minute sneak peak of the Starbucking during his presentation! He will also be starbucking all over Southern California and the cameras will be following him.
